APC Internship Program

The Australian Press Council was established in 1976 and has a membership of about 900 newspapers, magazines and online new sites. The Press Council is the body primarily responsible for

  • developing and promoting high standards of media practice, including through education and training initiatives;
  • handling complaints alleging that the standards may have been breached; and
  • advocating for free speech, freedom of the press and community access to information of public interest.

As part of its education and training role, the Press Council is now providing voluntary internship opportunities for tertiary students in journalism, media and communications or law, working at the Sydney-based Secretariat in the three areas described above.

The Press Council does not provide any remuneration or financial assistance to interns. Interns take up the position on a voluntary basis, normally one day per week during an academic semester, or intensively for three to four weeks in the summer (November through February).

Internships provide an opportunity for university students in relevant disciplines to immerse themselves in applied media ethics, working closely with Council members and Secretariat staff as well as interacting with working journalists and editors. For more information about the Press Council and its work, see http://www.jxdcao.live/

Preference will be given to applicants who are undertaking a supervised internship placement program in their home institution, but this is not compulsory. The Australian Press Council is committed to an equal employment opportunity approach and, in keeping with the Council’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are especially welcome.

Selection criteria for interns

Applicants must be in the penultimate or final year of a relevant undergraduate or graduate degree program (such as journalism, media and communications or law) from any Australian or overseas university.  As a practical matter, the internship program during semester time is aimed at students living in and around the Sydney metropolitan area, so they can be present in the Press Council offices one day per week.

The number of interns accepted in any particular period will depend upon the Press Council’s ability to provide meaningful work and strong supervision.

In order to be successful, candidates must demonstrate in their written application that they have:

  • the ability to analyse complex information;
  • strong oral and written communication skills;
  • strong research skills;
  • strong inter-personal skills and the ability to contribute in a team environment;
  • the ability to work independently with professional guidance; and
  • an excellent understanding of ethics and professional responsibility, including the handling of confidential and sensitive information.

 Candidates also must provide the contact details for two referees, either academic or professional.  The Press Council will normally ask short-listed candidates to attend an interview as part of the selection process.

Testimonials from previous interns

Sophie Trigger, University of Technology Sydney (August 2016)

I undertook an internship at the Australian Press Council from March – May 2016, and found the experience to be incredibly rewarding, both professionally and personally. Throughout my internship, I was lucky enough to assist in the organisation of the 2016 Press Freedom Conference, and found it a privilege to be part of such an exciting event. I was also given the opportunity to sit in on a council adjudication, and contribute to the research for upcoming standards.  The Australian Press Council provided a kind, patient and welcoming workplace environment, and I felt that my questions and suggestions were always valued. It was an excellent opportunity for me network and learn about press freedoms, and I would highly recommend the internship to any future candidate.
